Last Day for Unaffiliated Internship Applications

Today is the last day you may submit an unaffiliated internship application and expect it to be approved in time to start your internship. Please keep in mind that your internship must also meet the guidelines we have discussed such as it must be communications media related, it must be on site and it must be supervised by a communications media professional with the title or training you are seeking.

That said, the department will continue to accept applications for unaffiliated internships and process them as quickly as possible in the hope that it can be approved in time; but there are no guarantees!

Please stop by 127 Stouffer Hall, have some coffee, and let’s talk if you are still looking for an internship!

Misconceptions

As we near the April 2nd deadline, there are misconceptions we need to clear up.

  • There are no 6 credit internships. You may only complete a 9 credit internship.
  • The internship must be related to communications media. Getting a job is not an internship. Your work must be related to our field in some way and it must be work that requires a high level of college education to perform.
  • The Site Offer Form must be signed by hand. Your site can not print its name and initials on the form. It must be signed, preferably with blue ink. Same with the initials, the third page must be initialed by hand.
  • April 2nd is not the day by which your site must be affiliated. It is the date by which you must submit your paperwork if you are going to intern with an unaffiliated site. There is a huge difference!

IUPatty’s Day

If you are arrested for any reason it will be very difficult to find an internship for you and if you already have an internship the site would be well within their rights to terminate it. If you are caught on camera appearing disorderly or publically drunk, or interviewed saying something offensive to the site, they are also well within their rights to terminate the internship.

I strongly urge you to avoid all IUPatty’s events this weekend! The fun is not worth your career!

The Washington Center Costs

For those wise enough to apply early to The Washington Center and receive a scholarship, the time is fast approaching to accept or reject the offer. The scholarships have all been awarded so new applicants may still be accepted but they will not receive any scholarship assistance.

To help the early applicants decide, here is a cost comparison between The Washington Center and a normal internship.

The Washington Center Traditional Internship
IUP Tuition = $0
Program Fee (including housing and utilities) = $4340.00
IUP Tuition = $3651.80 (in state)
Program fee = 0$
Housing and Utilities = $1000
Total = $4340.00 Total = $4651.80

The Washington Center is not more expensive than any other internship and is, in some cases, cheaper.

14 Days Left to Find an Unaffiliated Internship

There are 14 days left to find an unaffiliated internship. Hopefully, over spring break you took time to visit potential internship sites, drop off a resume, and maybe interview. If not, now is the time.

IT IS NOT TOO LATE!

  1. If you have yet to get an interview, make a list of cities where you would like to live this summer. Be flexible!
  2. Google job descriptions in those cities. Include ‘Intern’ in the search.
  3. Look for potential places to intern. Don’t worry if they are not affiliated or if they are not looking for interns right now.
  4. Write down the address, the phone number, and the name of the supervisor/manager. Learn all you can about the organization from the site.
  5. Visit the site in person. Explain why you are there and ask to talk with the supervisor/manager. Leave a resume.
  6. Repeat until you have an internship.
  7. Call your parents, uncles, aunts, and family friends and see if they have a communication related internship where they work.
  8. Come see me and we’ll look together for potential sites.
