This year’s annual Hawk Walk will take place on Thursday, September 21, and you’re invited to participate! Participants will meet in the HUB Monongahela Room at 6:00 p.m.
The Hawk Walk is a campus/community “Welcome to the Neighborhood” initiative patterned after similar programs in State College, Pennsylvania; Boulder, Colorado; and Austin, Texas. Small groups of students, community members, police officers, and officials from the university and borough will walk door to door through select campus neighborhoods to distribute information packets and greet neighborhood residents. Packets include materials on ordinances, community services, useful contacts, and other essential community information.
It is the goal that the event will further increase community participation and awareness. The program will focus on neighborhoods with a mix of student and non-student residents.
Programs such as these continue to be successful in cultivating better neighborhood relations between students and long-term residents. Communities hosting neighborhood walks have enjoyed safer, cleaner, and more inviting neighborhoods, and we believe Indiana would enjoy similar benefits.
Given your standing in the university and the surrounding community, we invite you to participate in this event. Furthermore, the success of this event depends on the involvement of IUP representatives (students, faculty, and staff).
The Hawk Walk is sponsored by IUP, Downtown Indiana, and the Borough of Indiana, and it will take place on Thursday, September 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. An information session for all participants will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the HUB Monongahela Room. Walk participants will be asked to complete a brief survey following the Walk, and refreshments will be provided.
Please notify Betsy Sarneso at esarneso@iup.edu or 724-357-2598 by Monday, September 18, if you plan to participate. Questions can be directed to Betsy.
