Former Cook Honors College student Matthew Browe is currently pursuing an engineering degree that is fully funded by a Department of Defence SMART Scholarship at Penn State. He raved about this program during a recent visit and wants all CHC STEM students to consider applying. It is highly competitive but achievable as evidenced by his success. Contact Kevin Berezansky (kevinb@iup.edu) if you are interested in talking with Matt about his experience with SMART.
The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program is part of a highly concentrated effort to improve the flow of new, highly skilled technical labor into the Department of Defense (DoD). The purpose is to promote the education, recruitment and retention of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in science, mathematics, and engineering studies; the DoD is also interested in supporting the education of future scientists and engineers in a number of interdisciplinary areas. SMART Scholars are awarded an annual stipend, full tuition, required fees, health insurance, and a $1000 book allowance per year. The SMART Program will allow individuals to acquire an education in exchange for a period of employment with the Department of Defense. The program is intended for citizens of the United States; students must be at least 18 years of age at the time of award. Application opens August 1st and the deadline is December 1st.
