The topic that I’m going to discuss today is the gap between women and men pay. This is an issue in society because women deserve to be paid just as much as men or more. Women are almost half of the workforce. They are the sole or co-breadwinner in half of American families with children. They receive more college and graduate degrees than men. Yet, on average, women continue to earn considerably less than men.

When you think of gender gaps, perhaps you think of a man and woman who work exactly the same job at exactly the same place, but he gets paid more than she does. This sort of discrimination has been illegal in the United States since the passage of the Equal Pay Act in 1963. This a major concern because our women lead our households and they deserve the fair opportunity that men does. Sexism is also a huge problem in society. Some people think women can’t do certain objectives that men can do.

To solve this issue I believe women should be paid just as much as men. For instance men professional basketball players make millions of dollars in the NBA. But women in the WNBA make annually 80k per year. They both are professional athletes and playing the same sport. There should be closer wage gap between them. Also, I believe people should be less sexist! Women are strong and capable of handling the same work environment as men. So they should be paid like it.

In 2019, according to cnbc.com women earn 79 cents for every dollar men make in 2019. If I had the power to change that, I would make women pay 100 percent equal to men. The gender pay gap is the result of many factors, including occupational segregation, bias against working mothers, and direct pay discrimination. Additionally, such things as racial bias, access to education, and age come into play. Consequently, different groups of women experience very different gaps in pay.

Do you think the gender wage gap is fair? Do you think women should be paid more or less? If you think the wage gap is fair, think of struggling mothers out there that have a difficult time supporting their households. Would you want your sister, mother, or wife to struggle to take care of their families? If more men were called out in the working environment do you think sexism would go away?
