Multicultural Affairs & Student Success (MASS) is sponsoring four Black History Month events this week and next. The focus of these events are varied and will provide opportunities to explore topics not typically found in the classroom.

Thursday, February 21st 7:00 PM. MASS will be hosting a viewing of the movie Green Book. Nominated for 5 Oscars, Green Book tells a story of friendship between an African-American classical pianist (Mahershala Ali) and a working-class Italian-American (Viggo Mortensen) as they drive through the 1960’s American South.

Tuesday, February 26th 12:15 PM. This Lunch & Learn event is titled: “A Love Deeper Than Water: A Sex-ploration of Black Women Writers”. Come explore the ways in which the black female body has managed to shape and reshape America’s discourses of nationalism, helping to redefine what it means to be human, black, and woman respectively in a postcolonial society. The presenter is Mr. Nedrick Patrick. Lunch will be provided for attendees.

Wednesday, February 27th 2:00 PM. Working with IUP Theater & Dance Department and IUP Women & Gender Studies, MASS is excited to host a Meet & Greet with Patreshettarlini “Pat” Adams. IUP Alumni, Pat Adams, followed her passion to Philadelphia where she currently works at The Wilma Theatre. She looks forward to sharing her experiences with current students at this networking event.

Thursday, February 28th 6:00 PM. It is titled: “Still I Rise, Open Mic & Poetry Slam.” To close out Black History Month, we are providing a space for students to share original pieces and famous works that have impacted them, recognizing the Black Experience in America. All artistic expressions are welcome. Performance slot sign-ups to be taken at the door.

All events will take place in the MCSLE Great Room in Elkin Hall.
