Sociology in the Navajo Nation

An amazing experiential learning opportunity for IUP students (undergrad and graduate alike) that will be offered this May!

The program is entitled:  Sociology in the Navajo Nation and is a 3-credit, two week long program offered during 2017 May intersession,  with travel dates set for  May 14-25, 2017.  Students do not need to be Sociology majors or minors to participate!

To participate, students will register for Soc 417/517 Global Service Learning, and as an extension of that course,  travel to the Navajo Nation (the largest Indian reservation in the US, spanning much of northern Arizona and western New Mexico). This program is offered in partnership with Amizade, a Pittsburgh based non-profit global service learning organization. Additional program fees apply. While on location, students learn about Navajo culture and history, social and environmental issues facing  Native Americans on reservations.  Equally important, students have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with members of the host communities.  The learning takes place in a  non-traditional classroom, enabling students to reflect on  questions about social and economic justice, self determination for indigenous peoples, and what it means to be a global citizen. Here is a video on the program : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9UmDeWrBQs&feature=youtu.be

Deadline for applications is March 1. Students should call (724-357-7635), email (melanieh@iup.edu)  or speak to me directly (office:  112C McElhaney hall) for additional information about costs, itinerary and course expectations.
