Exciting Guest Speaker! Fine Arts Lecture Opportunity!

You are invited to hear guest speaker Dr. Shawn Alfonso Wells give the presentation “”Experiences of Blackness in Cuba  and the United States,” hosted by IUP’s Pan-African Studies Program. The presentation is planned for Tuesday, February 14, 2017, 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Room B-11 of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building.

Peoples of African descent in Cuba and the U.S. share similar histories, but racial identities and race relations in these
countries have some striking differences.  Dr. Shawn Alfonso Wells, instructor of history and anthropology at Carnegie Mellon University
and the University of Pittsburgh, will discuss the contributions and challenges of African-Americans and Afro-Cubans in their respective countries,
noting how race is conceptualized in each society. This presentation is free and open to the public.  Attendance vouchers will be available.
