On Wednesday, November 9th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Eberly Auditorium, the student chapter of the Pennsylvania Prison Society will be hosting a presentation and open discussion related to substance abuse and the response from criminal justice and social service agencies.
The Pennsylvania Prison Society (PPS) was founded in 1787 by prominent Pennsylvanians such as Dr. Benjamin Rush and Benjamin Franklin. Their mission was to monitor the emerging use of prisons as a form of punishment and ensure that punishments were administered humanely. Since then, the PPS has continued that mission and provides programming across Pennsylvania that promotes the principles of restorative justice.
The student chapter of the PPS at IUP seeks to raise awareness of issues related to crime and justice, and each semester, we organize open discussions related to pressing issues. This Wednesday, Ms. Lucy Garrighan will open the discussion by sharing her experiences with her son’s addiction and fatal overdose. She will be joined by representatives from the Indiana County District Attorney’s office, the Armstrong-Indiana-Clarion Drug and Alcohol Commission, Indiana County Probation and Parole, and Citizens’ Ambulance.
