The Dreadful Black Monday

Every year comes a very stressful and difficult time for NFL organizations to have to make executive team decisions that are in the best interest of their team. This time of year leaves lots of coaches and personnel on edge as to whether or not they will keep their positions. What I am referring to is called the dreadful black Monday. Black Monday essentially is the Monday following the end of the NFL regular season in which organizations decide if they want to keep or fire their head coaches. These decisions are based on numerous factors including how their team did the past season, the tenure, and other factors. And I am here to talk about the coaches who unfortunately were let go after this black Monday and what coaches should have been fired but still are the active coaches.

In the past, black Monday has left many fans surprised as to what coaches were kept and fired by organizations. Some are rather predictable, but others are very shocking and can really cause a lot of controversy with certain fanbases. Among all of the coaches that were fired the most obvious one had to be Adam Gase of the New York Jets. Despite gaining some life the last 2 weeks of the season, for the first 14 games, they were absolutely horrible as they had a point differential of 226. They averaged only 14 points a game and ranked last in almost every offensive and defensive statistic. Jets fans were very excited to see him go. Another fairly obvious fire had to be Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Marrone. The Jaguars finished with the worst record in the league at 1-15 and were on a fifteen-game losing streak after starting the year with a win. they had a lot of offensive weapons including DJ Chark and James Robinson, so there really wasn’t an excuse for the Jaguars to be this bad.

Although some coaches were almost guaranteed to get fired, some coaches were unexpectedly let go and it surprised a lot of NFL fans. Among the few include Los Angeles Chargers coach Anthony Lynn. tHE chargers finished 7-9 which isn’t great but considering what Lynn accomplished, his tenure should have been extended. The Chargers ended the season on a 4-game winning streak and were looking like they really improved since the beginning of the year. Lynn also was responsible for developing the best rookie quarterback of the draft in Justin Herbert. He guided Herbert into breaking the rookie record for touchdown passes and it is looking like Herbert is going to develop into a solid quarterback in the future. I believe the Chargers should have granted Lynn at least one more year to see if he can utilize the weapons he has to come out with a winning season.

It’s hard to imagine individuals losing jobs so quickly and easily. But at the end of the day, the NFL is a business and if the coach cant generate a winning culture within his organization, then he should be fired. Based on my opinion, I would recommend that organizations start interviewing possible new candidates for coaching am if they know that they will fire their current coach at the end of the season. Firing a coach serves as a lesson for every team and it helps them research possible candidates that will fix their past problems.

Leave a comment on this post if you have anything to say regarding your thoughts on black Monday. This is a harsh reality to face for teams, but it also helps them look forward to the future. i am very curious to hear what you all have to say in regards to the recent fires and if you agree or disagree with them. I leave you guys with a few questions: Which teams should of fired their coaches that didn’t? Do you believe any of the three coaches mentioned should have not been fired? Should coaches be notified in advance if they are being fired instead of right away?

Make sure to ask any questions or concerns that you may have regarding this post. Black Monday seems like a relatively confusing topic for some fans, so I am curious to see what you guys are wondering.
