Cosplay, much like everything else, is not perfect. Sometimes things go wrong, and that’s okay. These are some of the things that can go wrong, and how you can address them.
A cosplay build doesn’t work. Sometimes you have an idea or a picture in your head, and it’s perfect. Then you go to bring this idea to life, and something goes wrong. Now what? The first thing you do is take a deep breath. It’s okay, sometimes it just doesn’t work out. What you need to do now is reassess. What went wrong, and what can you do to fix it? Sometimes it’s a matter of trial and error until you find the right thing, and you get to bring your ideas to life. Other times what you were working on has to be scrapped, and that’s okay. I’ve scrapped so many costume pieces, and then I just try again.
What happens when you made your cosplay and something happens to it while you’re wearing it? More than likely you’re gonna panic a little. Again the first thing you should do is take a breath. What’s wrong with the cosplay? If it’s a simple fix like a ripped seam or some glue that didn’t quite hold, don’t sweat it. If you’re at a convention there’s probably someone who can help you out. If there isn’t a way to do a quick fix, don’t worry about it. Nobody is going to judge you if something quite right. Also, you can just wear it for the rest of the day and perform the simple repairs later.
Another thing that happens with a cosplay is that it really doesn’t hold up. Sometimes you make something and it just looks perfect. Then you wear it and it completely falls apart. I’ve had this happen with a pair of shoes that I painted for a cosplay. All of the paint was chipping and falling off at the convention. I was super upset that something that looked so good didn’t hold up at all. There was nothing that could be done to fix the shoes. The only thing you can do in that situation is learn from it. Take anything that goes majorly wrong and improve upon it the next time. The next time I needed shoes for a cosplay I made covers for a pair of shoes. I took my failure , and I learned from the experience.
Cosplay is not easy. It’s a learning experience, and a lot is going to go wrong. Wether it’s a design/build not working or a cosplay that’s not holding up it’s going to be okay. Everyone starts cosplay somewhere, and everyone messes up along the way. Have you ever had a complete cosplay failure?
