I don’t know if I’ve ever met someone who hasn’t heard of Law and Order SVU. The show has been on for 21 seasons. Which is a really long time.  I love the show, and it makes for great binging, but every show ends at some point. So many shows end after a season or two. So, how has Law and Order SVU stayed on the air for this long? How much longer will it stay on the air?

Law and Order SVU holds the record for longest live action prime time series. They’ve been on the air for a long time, and they show no signs of leaving. The ratings for the show are still good after being on the air since 1999. Their ratings are a good indication of why the show is still on the air. Studios are more likely to renew a show with good ratings. But more than just the ratings keeps a show on the air.

Law and Order SVU is lead by Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay). Hargitay stated that she would stay on the show for 25 years if the writing stayed sharp. Many fans of the show are incredibly loyal to the characters and the actors that play them.  Hargitay is the only original main cast member left on the show. If she were to leave, then I believe the show would be dead in the water. She’s become iconic in this role, and the show wouldn’t be the same without her.

So how long will SVU be on the air? No one can tell for sure, but the producers of the show don’t have any plans to end the show after the 21st season.  The real question is, will the studio renew them for another season? After looking at the ratings for the show I think they might. The ratings are still good, despite the fact that less and less people watch live TV. This show is a prime time staple, and I think NBC would be stupid not to renew it.

Law and Order SVU has been on the air since 1999, and is the longest running live action prime time show. The show tells important stories. I hope that it continues to run for a long time, and it continues to advocate for the victims. Have you ever watched Law and Order SVU?
