The Washington Center Update

TWC has scholarships in place for PA residents (this summer it is $11,000) that help defer the program and housing costs. TWC has more applicants than scholarship money available, therefore moving forward, they’ll be operating on a waitlist system for scholarships.

Any student that is eligible for a scholarship, has not participated in their Academic Internship Program before, and submitted a summer 2024 application before Friday, February 23will receive a scholarship. Scholarship notifications have already begun going out to those students – they go out on a rolling basis, so these students should all hear from TWC in the next 2 weeks.

Students that submitted applications starting Friday, February 23 and on, will be notified about being put on waitlist for the PA scholarship. TWC will ask if they’d like to stay on the waitlist or withdraw their application and I’ve been told that the enrollment team will explain what being on a waitlist means for them moving forward. Students can certainly still go to TWC without the PA scholarship; however, I know that is a draw for many of our participants and rightfully so.

TWC has also shared that they will be clear that if their participation is dependent on scholarship – they should not accept an internship until they’ve received an updated scholarship notification. TWC has a policy in place that if a student withdraws their application after accepting an internship, they owe half the program fee ($3,660).  So, it’s imperative that any student moving forward is aware of this and does not accept an offer without knowing their scholarship status.

Remember, the IUP Communications Media Department has a deadline of March 1st for applying to The Washington Center. That is fast approaching. Dr. Lenze will not approve internships for TWC for any applications submitted after March 1st.

Is It Too Late?

Students are stopping by my office and asking if it is too late to find an internship. While it is very late to be starting to look, it is not too late!

What can I do now?

Stop by my office. First, I’ll give you chocolate! Second, we’ll look at sites together and find posted internships that fit your needs. Third, I’ll show you how to find internships that work for you but aren’t posted online! There is a lot we can still do to get you a great internship!

Office Hours

MWF 10:00 am to 11:45 am
Other times by appointment

Hint: I’ll be in my office today (February 23rd) till 2:30 pm. Stop in!

What about The Washington Center?

The IUP Communications Media Department has established March 1st as the deadline to apply to The Washington Center. This is to give you time to find a placement at TWC and find a different internship if placement falls through. Remember, if you intern with TWC, your tuition is paid for by Pennsylvania. There are also a limited number of scholarships to help defray other costs. If you are considering TWC as an internship site, you need to apply now!

Stop in!
