Choosing software engineering or cyber security is a decision most computer science students run into. Both degrees will get you a good job in the industry, but each career follows its own path. So, which one is right for you?

Cyber Security

This degree will prepare a student to dive in to the ever-changing world of information security. The education focuses on how to protect networks, systems, organization, and the government. This field includes knowledge about digital forensics, ethical hacking, and cyber laws. There are different types of careers, such as information security analyst, information technology auditor, network architect, information security manager, and IT security consultant. These careers focus on the security and networking of a company.

Software Engineer

This degree will prepare a student to delve into solving the problems within computer culture. This field focuses on the technical skills of the computer industry, such as programming, algorithms, and general problem-solving. The types of careers this degree leads to are, software developer, systems analyst, web designer, data scientist, database administrator, and network systems administrator. These careers focus on the programming aspect; thus, you’ll be programming to fix or create for a company.

 

Which one is right for you? Depends on what you want to do. If coding is your passion, go for software engineering. If you want to work for the government, cyber security is your best bet.
