Philly Cheesesteaks (they’re not only good as a pizza topping!)

Most people have hear of a Philly Cheesesteak. Philly Cheesesteak is not only a sandwich but it is also a topping that can be added to almost anything. I myself have never had a normal Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. I have only had it as a topping on pizza (which is so amazing by the way). But, my aunt and uncle love a good Philly Cheesesteak.

A Philly Cheesesteak made at Pat’s King of Steaks restaurant.

The Philly Cheesesteak is not something that I have a particular familial connection with (especially for the fact that my family hates Philly because of the hockey penguins vs flyers rivalry) except for the fact that I know my aunt and uncle love to eat them. But, it is still a food that I have been wondering about its background. Being from Pennsylvania, I’m curious to see how this Philly Cheesesteak became such a big hit.

Pat’s King of Steaks restaurant where the creator of Philly Cheesesteaks made them for customers.

Apparently a man named Pat Oliveri invented the cheesesteak sandwich in the 1930’s in Philadelphia. Oliveri was a hotdog vendor who sold hot dogs in South Philly. As the story goes, one day Oliveri had a bright idea to put grilled beef on an Italian roll. While Oliveri was making this sandwich a cab driver drove past and caught a whiff. He then asked Oliveri to make him a steak sandwich and the rest is history.

But, basically the cab drivers started coming to Oliveri for steak sandwiches everyday until eventually Oliveri decided to open his own restaurant called Pat’s King of Steaks where he sold the steak sandwiches. In the 1940’s cheese was added to the steak sandwiches making them cheesesteak sandwiches.

Since I have no real connection to this food, having never even eaten it, I do not have a home recipe for the Philly Cheesesteak. But, I do have the second best recipe which is directly from Pat’s King of Steaks restaurant where the first Philly Cheesesteaks were sold. I have included the recipe in this blog as well as the website from Pat’s King of Steaks website. I plan on making myself a Philly Cheesesteak as soon as I possibly can. From eating Philly Cheesesteak Pizza’s i know that it will be good therefore, I recommend trying a Philly Cheesesteak as well.
