NFL Rookies

Every late April, the NFL draft takes place where up and coming stars turn their dreams into a reality. For most, the is one of the most exciting and anticipating moments of a young athlete’s life. But these athletes come to the quick realization that professional football is a lot more difficult and stressful as opposed to college football. Although many of these players don’t necessarily pan out in the NFL, a few end up making an immediate impact their first seasons as rookies. And I am here to discuss with you guys about how this year’s 2020 rookie class has panned out so far and which rookies exceeded expectations and which ones were disappointing.

First-round draft picks tend to be the most successful out of all the rookies drafted, and for this year, that remains mostly true. Quarterbacks Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovialova, and Justin Herbert have done exceptional jobs managing their teams this season and they all have very bright futures. Receivers Ceedee Lamb, Justin Jefferson, and Jerry Jeudy have panned out quite nicely for their teams as they all have eclipsed over 40 receptions and 700 yards for the year. And offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs and Mekhi Bechton have done an amazing job blocking this year and have both earned pro bowl honors. So needless to say, this rookie class is living up to expectations.

There have been quite a few players who have exceeded all expectations of becoming successful. Among those, the biggest is definitely running back James Robinson. This undrafted rookie out of Illinois State was projected to be a career backup but has surprisingly notched a prowl bowl bid this season based on his astonishing performance. Robinson has over 1,00 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the year which is absolutely crazy for a rookie. Another runningback shocked the world as Antonio Gibson, a third-rounder out of Memphis has done exceptionally well for the Washington Football Team. Gibson has 11 touchdowns with over 700 rushing yards and is shocking the football world.

Although some rookies have done very well, some were projected to be standout performers yet have been very disappointing, Wide Receiver Henry Ruggs on the Las Vegas raiders has been struggling this season. being that he was the first receiver drafted this past year, he was expected to make a huge impact but has not done so. The rookie only has 2 touchdowns and 23 receptions which is not much at all considering what he was supposed to accomplish. Another disappointing rookie is cornerback Jeff Okudah on the Detroit Lions. Okudah was regarded as one of the best defenders in the draft as he was selected 3rd overall but has actually been more of a problem than an issue this season. He only has 2 passes defended and has allowed a lot of big plays to opposing wide receivers. Hopefully, they will be able to bounce back next season.
