Let’s say that you landed a position in radio. That’s sweet! You’ve got your spot, playing your music, talking on air, and you’re thinking, “this is so awesome! As long as I do this I’m set!”. Here’s the thing, yeah that’s true to a degree. Being in radio while in school does look good on your part, you’re doing an extracurricular activity. although, you don’t want to completely ignore potential events happening around you just because you don’t feel like it on a Friday night. I’m going to tell you how participating in events can benefit you from necessity, all-around fun, and even opportunities that can follow.

To give you an example, I’ll tell you exactly what I did. I didn’t take part in them because I didn’t realize they were happening. No joke. I was getting emails about upcoming events that needed participants, and I had no idea. So, when there was only a month left in the semester, I had a rude awakening.

I was finishing up my segment one night when a student who had a show after me came and asked me about the event and if I was taking part in it. I remember responding somehow like “what do you mean”, or “what event” and her telling me about it. I told her jokingly how I hadn’t even known about them and didn’t do any the whole semester and she looked nervous. She explained how to stay on the radio, you need to DJ at least three separate events. With that being said, I checked my email every day that month and got my three in. What I’m saying is, if you were unaware, now you know. You absolutely have to DJ events!

At first, I was a little nervous because I wasn’t sure what to expect but I quickly found out there was nothing to be nervous about. In fact, I found out that DJing events are a ton of fun. If you enjoy calling upon people and getting people’s attention asking what they want to hear or how they’re doing, you’ll love it. One of the coolest things is when you play a song that’s part of your setlist, and see someone in a crowd light up because they love that song. On top of that, you get to meet so many awesome people. whether that’s other students DJing or regular students and spectators.

Lastly, and to go along with meeting people is you never know who you’ll meet at one of these things. It’s common knowledge, that people get places because of connections they’ve made in the past. When you DJ an event, you never know who you’re going to meet. It sounds far-fetched, but you could be at an event and meet someone who could give you some kind of opportunity that’s life-changing. You never know, play the right person’s favorite song followed by conversation, and next thing you know you’re on the big-time radio station or in a new town with everything waiting for you.

So if you’ve been on the radio, have you DJ’ed any events? Do you plan on it soon? let me know! You know how it goes, if you like my post, feel free to comment on it and share it with friends or family.
