Tips for dealing with fatigue

Physical exhaustion is not uncommon after a strenuous dance training so the last thing any dancer needs is to be feeling constantly tired and low on energy as well.  Feeling exhausted all the time doesn’t only affect your performance, it also puts your body at greater risk of injury. It can also take a serious toll on motivation and that is a problem.

When you’re suffering from exhaustion you’re more likely to get sick, feel emotional, make mistakes and not be your usually productive, happy self which can be frustrating when right before a big performance. The cause for fatigue varies for everyone but there are some helpful things you can do to reduce the chance of hitting that energy slump.

The thing that everyone goes to are quick fixes, but that does not help in the long run. The problem with most junk food is that the levels of fat and grease that they contain require considerably greater work to be broken down by the body, so a lot of your energy source is burned trying to just break down these foods instead of going to your muscles. This leaves you feeling sluggish and not re-invigorated by your snack. Healthier snacks like apples and peanut butter will supply you with more energy.

I recommend better sleeping. Studies show that well-rested people are typically 20 percent quicker at performing physical tasks than those who do not receive adequate rest. Aerobic exercise has shown to help you fall asleep faster at bedtime, spend more hours in deep sleep, and wake up less often throughout the night. Just make sure it is aerobic and not vigorous exercise and that can help you sleep better and feel less fatigue during the day.
