It’s Just a Pigment of Your Imagination

These two Alvin glasses are in my collection. Notice the fading on the right glass. The only reason I have it is because it was sold along with the good Alvin for a great price.

There is another problem with paint in glassware that needed to be discussed separately from the other issues. It may also be faded, which could be through use and washing or standing in direct sunlight too long. This also decreases a glass’s value. It doesn’t mean you can’t buy it, but it would be subpar compared to the rest of your collection, and it wouldn’t improve the collection either.

Again, there is nothing that can be done about this when finding one. And that’s not the only thing to consider. We can decide to buy the glass as there are varying levels of fading. However, any fading decreases the value, so it might not be worth the effort. There are some solutions that may help.

First, one option is to ignore any faded glasses if the glass can be “commonly” found. If it’s a ‘hard to find’ glass and you want to buy it, check out the fading if it is severe or not. Look at the inside of the glass to see what the original paint looked like. Judge the degree of fading by comparing the inside paint to the outside paint. If it’s not faded badly and priced right, then purchase it for your collection or possibly sell it for a little less than its market value. If it looks bad, then pass on it.

I personally wouldn’t buy glasses with faded paint. I can usually find others that are of better quality. However, if I ever did find a rare glass, I would judge the severity of the fading, then decide what to do. Still, I wouldn’t want to put one faded glass in with the rest of the pristine glasses in my collection. I might buy a slightly faded one, taking everything into consideration, but I’d still keep a lookout for a better one as well.
