Supplements

Supplements are beyond popular with the fitness industry. Take a pill and run faster. Take this pill and lift heavier. Take yet another pill and your muscles will double in size. And don’t forget the energy powder because it makes you work harder. Is your stomach a bigger than you want? Take this pill and it will shrink. These are all things I am sure you’ve heard. If not, I would actually be shocked! You can hear these claims on the TV, the internet, your local fitness store, and from gym members. As your Health Cop, I will explain why these are all a trap. I am deliberately refraining for explaining any supplements because after you hear my opinion, I would expect you to do further search if you are unsure. Here are three reasons you should stay away from most supplements.

  1. Supplements can be dangerous – this one is a no brainer. Most of the bottles or packages of supplements have a disclaimer that reads, “Consult a Doctor before consuming”. This is probably a good idea! However, do most people follow that rule? No, they do not. People skip the safety step because they simply want the results. Remember, every human body is different. Over the years, we all develop our own deficiencies. It all depends on individual diet. You may be lacking a key nutrient that might be causing problems inside. On the other hand, your diet may be well rounded and there would be no need for supplements. It can be hard to figure out what nutrients your body may be lacking. Thus, schedule a doctor’s appointment for a precise answer! If you take supplements that you are not lacking, it could be harmful to the body. I enjoy the saying, “There can always be too much of a good thing”. Be cautious as you move forward. Only take a supplement if the doctor says it is necessary for your health.
  2. Supplements can be expensive – If you do not follow tip #1, you could be looking at potential health problems. But if you do not follow this tip, you could be looking at potential financial problems. This is because supplements are an expensive product sold by businesses. The entire point is to make money. To do this, they will feed you any information. It could be harmful, dishonest, or false info. That does not stop them. Once a person begins buying a supplement, it can be hard to stop because they feel as if they need it. Therefore, a viscous cycle of continuously buying a supplement will add up to be very expensive each year. Do yourself a favor and avoid it entirely. Only invest the money if the doctor says it is necessary for your health.
  3. Supplements may not work – the number one reason supplements may not work is because your body does not need them. We talked about this above, you may have a well-rounded diet. Therefore, I will reiterate having a conversation with your Doctor. Secondly, I told you about how businesses simply want to make money. I am under the opinion that a business would sell a sugar tablet that claims to make people lift heavier. This only makes sense because people will still buy it because they have no idea what is in it. They are clueless to the fact that they are being scammed into spending hundreds of dollars for a useless product. This is where personal research can be useful when considering supplements. I mentioned Nick Bare in one of my previous posts. He was one of those users at one point. He regularly bought supplements that he was unsure as to if they even worked. Therefore, he started to make his own products with his college education. By doing this, he knew exactly what was in the supplements he was taking. Not everyone has an opportunity like him. Therefore, that again why I would dive into some deep research for products that you feel safe about if the doctor recommends.

If you read my whey protein post, you would know that I do indeed purchase this product as a meal replacement. I do this because by tracking my own macronutrients, I noticed my protein intake was too low. I needed something to help me out. This is the approach I would recommend for you. Examine yourself to find obvious deficiencies. If you cannot find anything wrong with your diet, go see the doctor for reinforcement of your self-examination!

Comment below: are there any supplements that you regularly take? What is the reasoning as for taking it? Also, do you feel as if it is working? I would love to hear about the products we all use!

Yours truly,

Health Cop
