Objectives met during internship:
- Gain experience in a professional work setting consistent with the student’s career goals.
- I planned out shoot dates with my fellow interns. I had to make videos according to what the client wanted. I had to learn new equipment used for video production such as a new GoPro. I had to plan out the shoot days according to the due dates of each project.
- Develop an understanding of the work environment and use this understanding to refine career goals.
- I learned to be respectful and straight to the point when getting footage for clients. I learned how to work with others and combine our creativeness to make something great. I learned to respect people’s times and availability. I learned its okay to have fun as long as you get done what you need to get done.
- Develop skills, knowledge and experience in areas specific to the internship setting.
- I learned how to deal with clients. I learned to prepare for a shoot the day before. I learned how to use a glide cam to get smooth crane like shots. I learned how to go into a shoot and plan out the b-roll when I arrived at the location. I learned how to meet the client and discuss how they want their video to look.
- Refine interpersonal skills.
- I made sure to make everyone contribute one way or another. I made sure to give everyone the same amount of respect. I learned that if I had a problem with someone, talking with them in a calm and respectful manner works best. If someone is having a bad day or being rude, I try to show empathy before jumping to conclusions and return the same energy.
- Worked a minimum of 320 hours.
- I worked around 40 hours a week, every week. Most of my hours came from video editing and planning. Some of my hours came from working on my final project. Some hours also came from the weekend shoots we had.
Objectives not met during internship:
- Develop professional contacts.
- I didn’t have anyone outside of IUP in contact with CMPR. I only worked other interns and Dr. Jeff Fratangeli. I intend to develop professional contacts in the near future by working with more people in the video and film industry. I also plan on using Linked in a lot more frequently.
From this internship, I realized a few things about myself. For one, I enjoy being in a leadership position. I find that I enjoy leading the charge and being looked to for guidance. From that, I learned how to better communicate and work with people when I had to teach my fellow on-campus interns how to edit using Adobe Premiere Pro. I also learned that I enjoy going out and shooting a video more than anything else. I know how to do all stages of video production, but from the internship I realized that using a camera is more exciting to me. I could see myself doing this as a job, however, dealing with clients isn’t the most fun thing to do. I’d much rather work in the film industry where we don’t have to deal with clients.
