Football is one of America’s favorite sports to watch and play. But football is also a dangerous sport. Your running up and down a football field so fast colliding with other players. Football could leave a dangerous effect on your body. A dangerous injury that football players deal with is concussions. A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a blow to the head.
According to (Cnn.com) reports show an increasing number of retired NFL players who have suffered concussions have developed memory and cognitive issues such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, depression and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Players that have been diagnosed with concussions tend to have shorter careers than players who don’t. Because of concussions players also often retire early because fear of developing CTE. According to Boston University and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Researchers studied the brains of 165 people who played football at the high school, college, or professional level and found evidence of CTE in 131 of them (79 percent). Of the brains studied, 91 of them belonged to former NFL players, and 87 of the 91 (96 percent) had signs of CTE. This goes to show how dangerous football can be.
To solve this issue the NFL had made more strict rules to make the game safer. Such as limiting the contact to the head. In the NFL you absolutely can not hit a player in the head with your helmet or shoulder. Thes type rules help but the sport is still a dangerous game. Also, to help prevent concussions if a referee thinks a player is hindering a head injury they have to go to the sideline immediately. To get checked out by the medical examiner. If a player passes tests on the sideline they can get back in the game. If a player fails the tests they can’t be permitted back in the game.
I believe there should be more padding in the helmets to protect the players from head injuries. The rules enforced in the game today is safer than it was before. Helmet to helmet contact used to be legal in the NFL. Now it’s not. Making it clearly safer to play. I believe also, there should be more medical examiners and team doctors on the sideline during the games. Some players try to hide concussions to get back into the ball game. If a player is believed to suffer a head injury he should be out the rest of the game with absolutely no evaluation!
Would you let your child, brother, or husband play football? Do you believe football is a dangerous sport? Do you think in the future football would be banned completely? If there are more cases of CTE in the future; do you think people would want to stop playing football? Please let me know what you think.
