If you are a Detroit fan, these past few years under Head Coach Matt Patricia have been especially tough for the Lions. During his tenure, Matt Patricia’s Lions went a disappointing 13-29-1. Even worse, these are two wasted years of a potential hall-of-fame caliber quarterback in Matthew Stafford. In his career, Stafford has thrown for an impressive 45,109 yards and 286 touchdowns. Even though he has shown amazing streaks of talent, Stafford has never won a playoff game in his tenure with the Lions that spans over a decade now. With the team appearing to make no progress after an anemic 5-11 record this season, it leaves many wondering what the future holds for Matthew Stafford.
In the past, I would have said there was no chance that Stafford would ever leave the franchise he has put up staggering numbers with. After seeing a Carolina franchise let go of a former MVP candidate in Cam Newton and the Chicago Bears trading Khalil Mack, nothing is off the table. The NFL has become far more liberal with dealing players than it has been in recent memory. It is not at all out of the realm of possibility for the Lions to trade their franchise QB to garner draft capital to start a rebuild. What would be the best situation for Stafford.
At the age of 32, Stafford still has a window of opportunity to produce for a team at a high level for a couple seasons. There are some possibilities for the franchise quarterback, some are better than others. The most obvious option would be to stay with the Detroit franchise and become a beloved icon in the state of Michigan, but ultimately never winning a championship. The other option would be for Stafford to be traded to a team that is in dire need of a quarterback.
I think a situation that would be incredibly beneficial for both Stafford and all teams involved would be a trade to New England. While the Patriots missed their first postseason in quite some time, they finished the year with a respectable record of 7-9. This team had multiple defensive players sit out this season and were still able to compete with an almost washed-up Cam Newton at the helm on offense. Stafford could go to a team that has a respectable defense, an established head coach in Bill Bellichick, and the potential to grab some big-time free agents with a new dynamic QB and head coach duo.
There is a litany of other trade scenarios for Stafford. Let me know what you think would be a good situation for the Lions quarterback by leaving a comment down below. Should the lions hold on to him? Can he win a championship?
