This past weekend was a wild one for the NFL as it was the last week of the regular seasons. Teams clamoring for their spot in the postseason. Even teams like Philadelphia, who had an anemic record of 4-11-1, were still in the playoff picture in their last game against the Washington Football team. Part of the reason we love sports is the sense of competition, and the fact that any team could win on any given Sunday. Sadly, it seems that the Philadelphia Eagles, and more specifically Head Coach Doug Pederson, don’t care about the integrity of the game and spirit of competition. In their game against Washington, Doug Pederson sat out Jalen Hurts in favor of their third-string quarterback for the entirety of the fourth quarter, despite only being down by 14 points.
Now in the past, I, like many fans, have suspected some professional sports franchises of “tanking” their seasons in hopes of getting a better pick in the upcoming draft. This situation to me seems like more than that. I have never seen a team blatantly not try to win a game against a divisional rival. The Eagles are in the same division as the Football Team and could have knocked them out of the playoffs if they had won. The only thing that makes sense is that Philadelphia was trying to jump from the number 9 spot in the draft to the sixth spot. The tanking was so blatant that veterans Carson Wentz, Jason Kelce, and Zach Ertz refused to leave the field after the game. They just sat on the bench in awe at what had just transpired. In my experience, that is a sign of a truly fractured locker room. If you are a Philadelphia fan, where do you go from here?
There are a variety of solutions to their problems, and some end prettier than others. One thing is for sure, change is coming and that is gonna be starting with former starting quarterback Carson Wentz. After being benched for Hurtz, the Eagle’s 100-million dollar man requested a trade from the dysfunctional organization. Another solution, which seems like the easiest solution, is to part ways with the Head coach and start with a fresh system and try to reinvigorate the locker room. The last option would be to completely clean house and trade every older asset and fire the entire staff. This measure is drastic but might be what is necessary to fix the obviously broken culture that has been set in Philadelphia.
My recommendation to the Eagles would be to obviously trade Wentz. If you can unload his horrible contract, it would open up options for the team to attract new players with the additional cap space created. I would definitely recommend that Pederson Be let go. You can’t do what Pederson did and stain the integrity of the game for everyone and still be expected to keep that same head coaching job. While yes Pederson won a championship with Philly, that doesn’t make him untouchable. The Eagles need new life in their locker room and someone to be a leader, which is clearly what this team is lacking right now.
