Music Discovery Strategy

The amount of music is so immense today that it can really be hard to discern the new artists you like, from the large amount of music that just doesn’t fit your taste.  Music is most definitely a party that everyone is invited to, and it’s the more the merrier.  There is no hard and fast rule to good or bad music, but how do you find new music that suits you?

Most people think that finding music is time consuming, so they immediately face an illegitimate obstacle.  Besides that, so many people accept the “fact” that modern music is lacking something, or that it isn’t the same as it was from the time of their favorite music.  Even if these two issues don’t speak for you, the common question is where to look?

Finding music can take anywhere from thirty seconds to a lifetime, so it is an incredible hobby to gain an interest in.  Music will be around forever and it is always changing.  If you are somebody who thinks that modern music “sucks” or isn’t what you’re looking for, then you’re not looking in the right places.  This leads me to my most important point: Where do you find your next favorite band?

Following blogs is a great way to discover new music.  Pitchfork Media, is a blog that posts every day.  Pitchfork focuses on independent artist and rivals the popular music blog NME, which is also a great music blog.  The Hype Machine is another really cool website.  It monitors hundreds of music blogs on the web, and is devoted to finding the hippest buzz in the underground music scene.  It has a huge library of music where you can listen and download the songs you like the best.  The final blog I will shout-out is Stereogum.  Stereogum is an awesome music outlet that features artist who are completely independent and usually unheard of.  Many mainstream artists have gone through Stereogum before they broke big.

A quick vector for a site that isn’t a blog but is a unique and fun tool to find a few bands that you may not have heard of before is Gnoosic.  Gnoosic, is a site designed to blend your taste in music.  You type in your three favorite artists and it finds bands with similarities in a survey style.  At the end of the survey you receive a list of bands you might be interested in.

Finding music isn’t that hard, just get out there and find the next kings of Rock n Roll!

Could you imagine a world without music?  What is your favorite indie/underground band
