Other art classes might seem unimportant and boring, but they actually help with your education as a whole. I used to have the mindset that the general art classes were a waste of my time until I started noticing myself using the things I learned.
If I’m being honest, classes like sculpture and painting were dreadful to me. I didn’t enjoy these types of core classes that IUP forced me to take. I could understand the even more general classes, like figure drawing and fundamentals of drawing, but painting seemed way out of range to me. However, as I took the class I noticed myself using old skills from earlier drawing classes. Painting also helped me learn more about color, which is an important aspect of graphic design. Sculpture also helped me understand 3D models. This would help with IUP’s ART 455 class, which is digital 3D modeling.
I know it can be tempting to not try hard in the seemingly pointless classes IUP makes you take for an art degree. However, they are going to help you in the long run. Personally, I never noticed how much the other classes helped with my graphic design skills until my junior year. By then, it was too late for me to go back and take those classes more seriously. You also want to get good grades in those classes in order to keep you GPA high.
Always make sure to take full advantage of your classes, regardless if they are what you’re interested in. Learning other skills will benefit you down the road.
