Are you doing what is necessary to generate good contacts for networking?

I wrote briefly about an approach to creating a new networking contact. I explained how I wasn’t sure who had the most professional approach. Is the most professional approach always the most effective approach? What do yo u think?

Today I want to focus on your networking as a whole, rather than just the approach in generating new contacts.

Creating connections with people can be difficult for some, me included, because I often struggle to find interesting topics to bring up or to start a conversation. The easiest way I’ve been networking, and it’s worked, is talking to friends and family I’m comfortable around and making new connections that way. I’ve been fortunate enough to have friends and family interested in getting me in touch with people that they know in related fields.

Today I called two friends who have family members that work for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills. I called both of these friends just to reiterate my interest in their family members career organizations. Both conversations went well, and I think they can sense my passion for sports and digital media. The reason I called them was to remind them about getting me in touch with their family member, and both were again very willing to helping me get in touch with them.

Pursuing potential contacts through networking is what it’s all about. The more involved in getting to meet new people in your field opens up your job opprotunites in the future. That’s all I’m trying to do. Get my name out there so people hear it and can recognize it. Then I want the people I meet to match my name with professional, clean, and appealing graphics. That’s my viewpoint on networking and doing what is necessary to be recognized.
