A cover letter is the first thing a director or choreographer is going to see from you. The first impression is very important and you want to make it a good one. It can have a major impact on their opinion of you.
If you have never been formally taught how to make a cover letter it can be frustrating to decide what to put into the letter. It is hard to determine what information is valuable to the letter and what can be left out. Career workshops can be great for these types of things but sadly they are not available to everyone.
I’ve learned from career building classes that the cover letter is to brag about yourself and show how you are a good fit for the company. Start the letter by saying you want to audition for the company and what position you’re auditioning for. Also, include why you want to dance for this company. This is your opportunity to show you’ve done your research on the company and impress them that you care for the company and know their values. Then talk about yourself. Do a short summary of who you are as a dancer: where you’ve trained, what companies and choreographers you’ve worked with. Lastly, give a respectable closing to the letter.
I think a great header makes a good cover letter stand out. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy or elaborate. Just make sure it’s in a font that can be easily read and large enough to make it stand out at the top of the page to make the reader remember you. Make sure the header includes your name, email address, phone number, and physical address. A huge mistake you do not want to make is having any spelling errors to make sure you check your header and entire cover letter for these.
