How to get the perfect ballerina bun

When competition season rolls around it’s time to start practicing getting that perfect bun. Hair is an important part of a performance just like make-up or costume so getting it perfect is a must. It is not always easy though and there are many steps to take to ensure your hair does not fall out while performing.

I have tried many different ways to do my bun over the years I have been dancing and I have cracked the code on how to achieve a perfect bun. It can take trial and error to get the perfect bun but that takes time. I took the time and frustration so you don’t have to!

A traditional ballet bun is very simple and good for beginners. It looks elegant on stage and will complete your ballerina look. Brush hair into a ponytail, about in line with your ears. If there are still bumps in your hair then use some hairspray and use a comb to smooth them out. Twist ponytail around itself and then around the base of the ponytail. Tuck the end of the ponytail under the base of the bun and secure the loose ends. Finish off the look with a last coat of hairspray.

A bit more difficult one but one I find works better is using a bun doughnut. The doughnut should be as close to the color of your hair as possible so that you will not be able to see it. Bun doughnuts also come in a range of sizes so you can pick one that suits the length and thickness of your hair. Put your hair into a ponytail then spread the hair from your ponytail in every direction over the doughnut to cover it. Place a hair tie the same color as your hair around the bun to secure it. Tuck the loose ends of your hair under the bun and finish with hairspray.
