Presentation is an incredibly important part of enhancing a dancer’s stage presence and building the aesthetic of a performance. When done correctly, stage makeup can enhance a performer’s features and make their expressions more visible to the audience. Having a seemingly flawless face can also help with auditions and give you an advantage over other candidates.
The right products are needed to complete a good face of makeup. It can be frustrating when you can’t get the right look. Often times stage makeup looks very cakey. Also, the look form stage is different from up close compared to far away on stage, which can give off the wrong emotion that the dancer is trying to portray to the audience.
A lot of makeup artists and professional dancers recommend using white eyeliner. It is very versatile in stage makeup. It can be used as a base for eyeshadow to make the colors pop or act as a mini highlighter for certain areas for the face. Another popular use is to make the eyes appear dramatically larger. This technique works to contrast black eyeliner for a more dramatic effect.
I recommend using a good primer. Every good makeup look starts with a good base layer on the skin. Primer makes the skin smoother which creates a smoother look for the foundation. It will also hold the makeup in place for a long time and while doing a long recital and performance the last thing a dancer needs to be worrying about is how her makeup looks. Keep your mind on your dance and not on your appearance because you will already know your flawless look will stay in place all day.
