Get back to the roots of technique

As a pre-professional student or professional dancer, you often crave the challenging classes with advanced steps, but there are basic things that are not covered in these classes that are necessary for clean dancing. When you do not think about it often your technique can start to weaken. The technique is the foundation of dance and when the foundation begins to crumble so will the dancer which is never a good problem to have.

A dancer may think that classes should only become harder and that they should only work on things that will physically challenge them. It can be frustrating when these new skills are not coming as quickly as they think they should be or looking as clean as they need to be. This can because the dancer has not focused on the foundation and technique enough.

Taking a lower level dance course is often what dancers do to get their technique back on track. Taking lower level classes will give you more time to practice in the studio and focus on your technique. Lower level classes will force you to take everything at a slower tempo, which will give the opportunity to work on elements of your technique that may slip away or get sloppy at a faster speed.

I definitely recommend doing this from time to time as well. It can give a fresh look to skills and make sure the dancer’s foundation is strong. Depending on your studio, you may work get to work with teachers. While teachers say basically the same things, a rewording or new visualization might click with a dancer and analyzing a step at a slower, simpler level might help the concept stick to the dancer.
