Common dance injuries: prevention and remedies

Dancing is a sport and with any sport, there is strain put on the body. There are fairly common minor injuries that are inevitable to happen to dancers. Most often they are not a source of worry but are something that should be treated seriously because if not taken care of can lead to larger problems.

Minor injuries can cause irritation and pain so it is best to be prevented as much as possible. If minor injuries do occur then it is best to take care of it while the problem is small. If the irritation is not addressed in a timely manner, the problem can grow into something serious which can lead to restricted dancing or taking time off which no dancer wants.

A common remedy is the RICE method. It stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Rest the injury to not put more strain on it. Ice the areas that there is pain. Apply compression to any parts that are swollen or may swell. Lastly, keep the injury elevated to prevent swelling.

I recommend doing everything you can to prevent the injuries, to begin with. Look out for things that could possibly cause injury. For example, dancers always want to dance on a sprung floor. It provides more cushion for softer landings. When a dancer lands on hard surfaces, it can put pressure on the dancer’s knees and ankles making them more susceptible to injury.
