How to get over stage fright

Even professional dancers can suffer anxiety and stress when it comes to new performances and big shows. The pressure that comes from the competitive world adds to the feeling of stage fright.

Dancers want to put on the best show possible and they can only do this at their peak headspace. No dancer ever wants to be so nervous they forget their dance or even worse, freeze on stage and not dance at all. The feeling is normal to have but can be frustrating when all a dancer wants to do is perform their best.

A good way to help someone with stage fright is to tell them that they are not alone and others are just as nervous as they are. This makes the dancer feel as though they are not alone in the battle and letting them know that they are extremely prepared for the performance will help too. The hardest thing about stage fright is that you have to face it head-on. The longer you avoid it the bigger it becomes and the more you practice the smaller it becomes.

I like to meditate when I start to feel nervous before a performance. Calm and silent time throughout the day of performance really helps me gather my thoughts and assure myself that everything will go well. Try sitting or lying calmly, closing your eyes and focusing on your breathing only to relax your body then start to reassure yourself on your performance then slowly go back to calming breaths.
