6 Steps To Music Production: Editing.

Are you ready for the hard part? We now enter one of the more tedious phases of creating a musical piece. Thanks to digital editing, recording and capturing an amazing performance is now a much more streamlined process. Editing is a tricky process and you should really only consider it as a back-up plan and not consider it as your go-to process. As a producer, you should treat this phase as its own individual process for a number of reasons and exclude it from the rest.

One of the biggest key takeaways that you can acknowledge when it comes to editing, is that you should never be editing when you are writing and recording. If you constantly stop to fix a mistake, you will end up ruining your focus and your vibe thus possibly resulting in you missing out on a great segment and recording. Do yourself a massive favor and just save the editing for later.

However, if you were to edit your projects too much, you would get the opposite effect. Over editing your work can drastically ruin the quality of your work. If you consider editing as a secondary function, you will eventually find yourself putting in far more effort into your work. This will allow you to provide solid performances and you will learn to capture what you need live, instead of spending twice the amount of time editing your work.

When it is eventually time to edit, treat this as a “do no harm” area. If it sounds good, then you do not need to edit your project. Use this stage to move around parts that do not match up with the corresponding segments; adjust certain pitches that aren’t quite there, or polish tracks by fading the beginnings and ends of each part so it comes in and out smoothly. The goal of this phase is to get your performance sounding as good as possible. The process of editing can be truly tedious, so never do more than you have to. Thank you for reading my blog post!
