When audio production is concerned, there are two types of headphones. The two types of headphones consist of open and closed backs. As a certified audiophile, I have gone through plenty of pairs of headphones of both types. When you are working with audio production, closed-back is always the better choice. However, in this blog post I will explain both types and give the advantages of each type.
The difference between the two different types is actually very simple and the only difference is the way each type is vented. Open-back headphones will often be considered the inferior of the two; however, they have their own unique set of advantages. The first advantage that is brought by open-backs is that they typically have higher sound quality over their counterpart. Another advantage is the weight of the headphones, open-backs typically are made up of fewer materials which in turn leads to a lighter weight. With there being less material, you will also have less irritation to your ears from the cagey feeling that closed-back headphones provide.
While open-back headphones are nice, closed-backs are considered better for good reasons. The biggest benefit to having a pair of closed-back headphones is their noise canceling abilities, and this is probably the most important feature to have when it comes to audio production. Another advantage of having a pair of closed-back headphones is that they have a higher bass quantity due to being closed, and this allows for a greater impact. One final reason that you might rather close over open is that closed-back headphones are typically very great for consumers because of their portable design, and in fact, many of these headphones are actually being designed for the sole purpose of portability. All of these elements play a large role for the consumer in determining what choice is best for them. Do you own a pair of each type of headphones?
