6 Steps to Music Production: Songwriting.

Can you produce a piece of music? When you think about audio production, there are many things that may come to your mind, but my focus here is generally focused around music. However, the skills that you gain when producing a piece of music are almost universal and can be applied to other aspects of audio production. The goal of these next few blogs is to help you understand the process of making music from beginning to end.

When it comes to making a piece of music, it can be hard to find a place to start and I once struggled, but luckily, the process of music production can be broken down into six categories. These categories include songwriting, arranging, tracking, editing, mixing, and mastering. Why would you follow this model? No matter what type of music that you make, you will want it to be good and you should want other people to enjoy it as well. You want your audience to hear your message clearly and not become distracted by a bad recording.

What does it mean to write a song? I would say that songwriting is the process of putting musical ideas together to form a larger structure of coherent melody, harmony and rhythm. It’s the process of brainstorming that results in a beginning, middle, and end. Songwriting is your pre-production phase where you lay out your ideas and come up with a plan to bring everything together. This is your time to consider what possible equipment you would like to use, what kind of message you would like to send, and how you would like to brand yourself. Songwriting takes time, and things will come together as time goes on, so if you lay out an appropriate foundation, the later phases of production will come much easier.
