Tips to Improve Focus in Your Pictures

When taking pictures as a photographer, it is sometimes very difficult to get your audience to look where you want them to look. There are many things that you can do as the picture taker in order to ensure that the audience sees the picture the way that you want them to see it. Keeping your audience focused on what you want the picture to illustrate is very important as a photographer, and there are a few tips I can give you in order to help ensure that your audience stays focused on the subject of the photo.

One easy way that you can ensure that the audience is focused on what you deem the subject of the photo is by blurring out the surroundings of your photo. By blurring out everything else in the photo, the audience is almost forced to look where you indirectly force them to. One way to do this is through a portrait mode that some cameras have, and even the iPhone has. Using a portrait mode helps establish the subject of a photo, and helps solve the problem of lack of focus in your pictures.

Keeping the subject of your photo central is imperative in order to make sure your audience is focused on it. If the subject of your photo is a person, then it is likely a good idea to place him/her in the center of the photo. The center will naturally be the place everyone looks first, and by placing your subject there it will help the picture be more focused. By placing your subject in the middle, you can help remedy the problem of your audience not looking where you want them to look.

Reducing the clutter in your photos is essential in keeping your photos focused. By having too much going on in one photo, the viewer can easily become overwhelmed and lose focus on the main idea of the photo. Make sure when taking a photo that you address the amount of clutter in the picture, and make sure there isn’t too much. By doing this, you can help address the issue of lack of focus in your pictures.

Using angles in your pictures is very important in the aspect of focus. Having the entire photo angled at the subject of your picture is important. For example, if you have a person who is standing in a forest, having him angled at a way that makes the trees look like they’re angled towards him can help improve the focus of the picture. This ensures the audience will look where you want them to look at- the subject.

What do you find to be the best way to make the focal point of your pictures stand out?
