When I was young, my mom used to play 80’s music in the car for me. Songs that I remember hearing range from “Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes to “When You Were Mine” by Prince. I remember singing along in the car with my mom when I was very young. The conversation that we had in class today about me not understanding the lyrics to “Bette Davis Eyes” when I was little made me think about all of the other songs that I used to listen to that I never full understood the lyrics to. I remember singing “Greased Lightning” from Grease and singing all the dirty and mature innuendos that a child of my age shouldn’t have been singing!
I went to see Rock of Ages the other night at Fisher Auditorium with my mom and we were laughing the entire time because of all the sex jokes that were in the show. We were laughing even harder at a mom that was sitting in front of us who had two little girls who looked 4 and 7 years old. The show was filled with dirty jokes, allusions to sex and a ton of swear words. Every time something dirty would happen, the mom would shield her daughter’s eyes or try to cover her ears so she wouldn’t be exposed to it!
The experience reminded me of when I was that young and was exposed to that nature of comedy and music. I think I grew up completely fine even though I was singing all the words to a song that was about a woman who would seduce and sleep with many men!
I figured that I would add my favorite song to this blog post! You’re welcome, Dr. Baumer!!
Love it! There should probably be an R rating for musicals though…
