League of Legends can be a challenging, fun, and frustrating game. Starting out can be confusing. With over 150 champions each with 4 abilities, knowing every interaction is difficult. The rune page is another complex area with 5 types, each consisting of 30+ options. Each rune page incorporates a main tree and sub tree, allowing for even more combinations.
When I first started, I was clueless. I played against bots for a long time (better to learn this way). Rune pages are updated every year or season, we still learn as a community. Summoner spells have rarely changed but I had no idea what spells worked with what characters. Lacking in one of these categories can be a major disadvantage when playing against players.
With the current season, Riot (league’s developer) has done a great job in suggesting items. Riot’s rune page, however, can be a little trickier depending on who and what champion you play. The general rule is domination is for assassins, precision is for attack damage carries, sorcery is for mages, resolve for tanks, and inspiration for champions Riot does not know what to do with.
Here we see the domination as the main tree and precision as the sub tree.
Champions can be a mix of roles depending on the items built, rune page, and summoner spells. The next few sentences will be for damage-oriented champions. If an enemy team has multiple “squishy” targets, the domination true may be more effective. If the enemy team has multiple tanks, the precision tree is useful for sustained damage and healing. Tanks always take the resolve tree. Bruisers are a unique class of champion that give wiggle room to being either assassins or tanks but normally a mixture of both.
The rune pages could be broken down into more detail and be based off matchups. This would be the precise way to know exactly what you need. If you have any general tips for starters or want to go in detail with matchups, comment below!
