As the early wipe progresses, some bullets and armor may seem more effective than others. In short, they are. Players are finding more gear via raiders, spawn locations, and progressing traders. Players from previous wipes have a large advantage in knowing what is useful and where to find it.
Escape from Tarkov’s realism mechanic is what drove me to purchasing and continually playing the game. I noticed that some opposing players were taking an abnormal number of shots before dying. The realism mechanic did not seem to make sense when 13+ shots hit a single target. But like in real life, we have body armor that is designed to stop lower caliber rounds and types. But what ammo should I use for what gun? What is economic?
The chart does a great job in showing how much penetration bullets have vs what class of armor. It also shows how much damage these rounds do, and the dotted line is the max hit points for the thorax. So, we would want the highest damage and highest penetration. Some players suggest the “leg meta”. Armored areas can cover the head, thorax, stomach, arms (rare), and not the legs. Players take advantage of this by buying high damage rounds and specifically targeting the legs. Another solution is buying a cheaper gun that can shoot a nice round. Some people also pick a middle of the road round so penetration and damage are both adequate.
I normally alter between cheaper gun/expensive rounds and good gear/middle of the road rounds. The hunter can shoot m61 and m62 rounds while costing only 25k-40k rubles (most decent gun setups are 100k rubles). Both solutions provide an economical advantage to those who take in the best gear possible while still giving you a fighting chance. I rarely use leg meta because it teaches poor shooting habits for late game when everyone has decent gear.
Since the wipe comes with an update, let me know if you found a better way to balance the constant gear/economics battle. Do some cheaper weapons and ammo produce better outcomes (I struggle with the hunter, but the stats seem superb)? Do some armors save you more than others? Let me know!
