My name is Christopher Fisher and I am a Computer Science Major at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I have two degrees; a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology and an Associate of Science Degree in Surgical Technology. I have worked as Certified Surgical Technologist for the past seven years in three different hospitals. There are various things that I have observed in my medical career that have ushered me to seek another employment paths. I have always had and interest in technology so I decided to pursue a degree in Computer Science.
Growing up in the outskirts of Armagh PA afforded me all the pros and cons of living a rural life. On the plus side of things, there is no shortage of outdoor activities to participate in. One of my favorite activities is riding my bike on the Ghost Town Trail near my home. There is no shortage of beautiful forests and mountain scenes to see on any length of that trial. Usually only local traffic is found there so long walks are also a region favorite as most of the neighbors can be seen walking on nice days past my house. One of the cons of rural living is the distance I am from civilization. Anytime something is needed from the store, a small trip must be taken so a lot of planning needed to me implemented. There are pros and cons to living in a rural area and in my opinion, the pros greatly outweigh the cons.
I have worked as a Certified Surgical Technologist for three different hospitals in Pennsylvania. You may be wondering what a Surgical Technologist does. Their most important job is the sterility of operating room procedures and keeping the patient safe from possible infections during their surgery. Preparing the operating room for the coming surgery, gathering the necessary equipment needed to perform the surgery, passing sterile instruments to the surgeon during the operation, assisting in retracting patient tissues when needed, suturing the patient closed at the end of the procedure(only in certain hospitals), counting all instruments to make sure none were left behind and dressing the incision site with the appropriate coverings are the biggest responsibilities of a Surgical Technologist. There are many other things that Surgical Technologists do but the above is a highlight of our main scope of practice.
Whenever we can, my fiance and I like to travel. Two years ago, we got the chance to spend fourteen days traveling through England, Scotland and Ireland. That was an amazing trip and I highly suggest it to anyone who has never gone before. We went through a travel agency and every part of the trip was planned so we could get the most out of our vacation. All of our transportation was arranged, most meals were scheduled, all of the hotels were four star or above and booked in advance and all of the sites we saw were prearranged. All we had to do was wake up by a certain time, jump on a bus and go. Everything else was taken care of for us. We loved the sites, people and landscape so much in Scotland that my fiance and I plan on retiring there someday.
