IUP Club Partners with FOYC to introduce the public to Sailing

SUNDAY, MAY 5, 2013 – Explore Sailing
12:30 PM – 2:30 PM – Meet at the Boat Rental (Main Day-Use Area)

Co-sponsored by DCNR, Friends of Yellow Creek, and the IUP Sailing Club

Join us to explore the sport and art of sailing on Yellow Creek Lake. This two-hour session begins with a lesson on the parts of the sailboat and introduces future sailors to the basics of wind awareness, sail trim, and points of sail. Three US Sailing Certified instructors will be on hand. After this orientation, in the second hour each student will have the chance to enjoy a short sail accompanied by a experienced sailor (weather permitting). We will wear PFDs, but to participate, sailors must be capable of swimming 50 yards in clothing and shoes. Participation is free but is limited to 12 students over the age of 10 years. Pre-registration required. To register call the Park Office at (724) 357-7913

Monday, Feb 18

Bob Dalecki will show us what is was like in the IUP sailing club “back in the day” and he will share some slides of recent sailing in the Chesapeake.

IUP Has Sailboats

Thanks to the Coop, the IUP Sailing club now has boats.  With the help of a Wind and Water Boatworks of Butler, we identified a YMCA Camp near Somerset that was renewing its fleet. Below you can see the inspection of the new “fleet”; the loading; and the boats at their new home on the shore of Yellow Creek Lake

The boats are Hunter JY15s.  They will be great boats for 2 or 3 students to sail together while learning.  They also have hiking straps and North Sails, for those students who move on to wanting to learn how to race.
Leave a comment here or find us on facebook if you want to be added to the mailing list.  Meetings and learn-to-sail will begin in September 2012!

Building Puddle Duck Racers

This April, members of the IUP sailing club got together to help build sailing, literally. Over two days, we constructed two new Puddle Duck Racer sailboats out of wood, nails, and glue. In the pictures, you can see the club president cutting out material for our DIY sails too.
Come fall, these great learning boats will hit the water at Yellow Creek.
