How to Make Fog Using Photoshop

Have you ever wanted to add a little more mood to your photographs? Fog is a great way to add just a little bit of mystery and beauty to any scene. Today I will show you how to add fog effects to your photos. If you want you can use this for both clouds and smoke to just add that little extra detail to your photos.

Start off with the photo you wish to edit. In my case, it is a picture I took of a lamp post

The first thing you’ll want to do is change your primary color to a light grey and you secondary color to white. On a new layer, go to Filter > Render > Clouds. The picture should look roughly like this.

Next, on the clouds layer, change the layer effects to Lighter Color. Then use the layer opacity tool, to the right, to thin out the fog until desired saturation. In this instance I lowered the opacity to 70%.

Finally, using the eraser tool at a low opacity, I thinned out the fog from the center up. This was the final result.

There are other methods, such as changing the fog layer effect to hard light and thinning the fog with the eraser tool, but I prefer the method above.  If you have other methods, which do you prefer?
