Difference Between College & NBA

A lot of people ask why is it such a difference when you watch the NBA compared to college basketball. Why are there way more open shots in the NBA when they are supposed to be the best in the world? Why do things look so easy in the NBA? There’s a lot of misconception when it comes to the style of the NBA compared to college basketball.

I’ve played three and going on my fourth year of college basketball. It is a very slow and methodical game. There are so many plays and calls that you must execute on a nightly basis compared to the NBA. I was very taken away by the fact that the style of the game was so different. It made me want to figure out what was different that much more.

One of the best explanations for the difference is style of play. In college basketball everything is based around a system. This is the way the coach wants to play and the things he wants to execute. He calls the plays and picks out what players he wants with the ball. He is the ultimate dictator when it comes to who he wants to have the basketball in their hands. In the NBA things are totally different.

The NBA game is very simple. It is controlled by the best players. The best players on each team usually have the ball ninety-five percent of the time to start the possessions. The coaches rely on them to usually make the plays and put their teammates in great positions to score. Also in the NBA the court is more spread out and a lot bigger than in college. So it’s easier to get wide open shots and to be more effective in the NBA. Another concept that is heavily used in the NBA but not college is 1 on 1 basketball. They try to isolate the best player so he can use his skill to score as many points as possible.

The best way to evaluate the difference is to sit down and watch the games. It’s an obvious difference when you watch and see what’s happening throughout the games. The college athletes play so much harder as well because they are competing to play at that next level and complete their lifelong dreams. Most of the NBA players are very content with where they are so they don’t really try too much until the playoffs. That’s where it really matters.
