Out of bounds plays aren’t that frequent in a basketball game. But they can completely change a game. A problem that you face is getting turnovers by the other team stealing the ball. Another problem is not being able to get the ball inbounds and getting a five second call. These are the ways out of bounds plays turn sour.
If you’re reading this blog to learn how to effectively get the ball inbounds then you obviously struggle in these situations. You’re either throwing turnovers to the other team or are getting five second calls because your teammates can’t get open. Either way it’s not a good sign. You’re just giving the other team the ball for more opportunities to score. That’s the easiest way to lose the game. By having so many turnovers and the other team converting.
A few solutions I have to solve the problem are to react to what the defense is giving you. If they are allowing you to throw it in the back court, then throw it in the back court. If they are letting you throw the ball in to get trapped, then take the trap because that means someone is open. Another solution is to call a timeout before you get a five seconds call. Any coach would rather take more time to think than a turnover.
I recommend that you play things smart. Find the open gaps in the defense if they are playing zone. If they are playing man to man then your players must get in their body and find a way to get open. Also I would run plays to get open. Set different types of screens and have multiple movements going on at once to try to confuse the defense. Lastly, I would just be patient and execute. Nothing will get done if you force things and overthink.
Is this how you were taught to face out of bounds defense? Do you agree with my ways? If you don’t why not? All your feedback is encouraged. I would love to hear what you guys have to say about my posts. Whether you like it, hate it, don’t care or just think it’s ok. Make sure you comment.
