One and Done College Rule

In college a lot of athletes come in thinking that if they do well enough they can leave right away. They come into college focusing on their individual stats and highlights. It’s called the One and Done rule. It’s actually less beneficial to college sports than what meets the eye. It limits the amount of great players in college basketball. The teams aren’t as good and it makes the whole league less enjoyable.

The one and done rule was not always an option for high school players. Before if they were old enough they had the option of whether they wanted to go to the NBA straight out of high school or not. This hurts college basketball in many ways. Not having those big name players reduces the revenue that college sports can obtain, it makes the overall competition not as good and it let’s these players use the school for a year with no intention of being a part of the legacy or culture. They are just there to play sports more than they are there for education.

It can be beneficial in so many ways if you are good enough. Many players have done it before like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett and many more names. But there are so many chances of things going wrong because of your lack of knowledge for the game. You’re barely developed at that time so everyone is usually going to be way stronger than you. Their basketball IQ will be higher because they’ve played the game a lot longer. There are just so many reasons why becoming a draft pick out of high school has its negatives.

The best option these high school players have is to go to College for a year and go through that experience. You will gain an opportunity to give your body that year to develop and full out strength wise. You give your mind a chance to develop as a basketball player and for your IQ to increase by playing way better competition and playing on a national level. If you find out that you’re not as good as you think then you have an education to fall back on, which benefits you in more ways than you think. These high school basketball players should just use their resources and take advantage of a multimillion dollar experience.

Now in the basketball scene today, kids have the choice of if they want to go to the NBA G League, or if they would like they can go straight overseas.Brandon Jennings was a trendsetter for a few guys like Emmanuel Mudiay,Terence Ferguson, Lamelo Ball and RJ Hampton. These are all guys who recently went overseas straight out of high school and chose not to go the college route. The NBA G League is just an affiliate league of the NBA where players go to develop their skills until they are ready to play in the NBA.

Playing in the NBA is a huge accomplishment for anyone. No matter where you’re from or how old you are obtaining that dream is something no person can take away from you. I would just make sure you know which decision is best for you in the long run. To hear from me don’t be afraid to post more questions.
