Lifting will mess up my shot! I will be too strong to shoot the ball! These are two common excuses as to why people think that lifting is not beneficial to playing the game of basketball. But in all reality it is one of the most important aspects of the game. Basketball is mostly mental and critical thinking but when you’re not strong you will always be overpowered by your opponents.Being overpowered and pushed around by your opponents will limit your abilities in so many areas.
Being the weakest person on the basketball court is terrible. On the offensive end, you can’t get past your defender to score, you can’t get around him to get rebounds and you’re not very helpful. On the defensive end you hurt the team even more. The person you’re guarding will be stronger than you so it will be easier for him to score on you. It will be very hard for you to box him out which will give him a lot of rebounds and opportunities for him or his teammates to score. As a coach if a player is giving up all these things then there is no other choice but to bench him.
One of the options you can do is calisthenics if you want to go the natural way. That’s a way to workout with no weights. So you can do push ups, situps and other natural movements to keep your body in the shape you want it to be in. It won’t make your body change tremendously in a short period of time the way real weights will. But it will still make you look stronger and feel stronger than you were before.
The best option for you is to workout with your teammates and follow your team’s workout plan. Every team has a workout plan especially when you’re in college. They put you through a strict regimen. It involves lifting weights and doing the best performance optimizing things that help you perform the best for your sport. The trainers would never steer you wrong when they put you through a specific workout. This is the best option for all athletes.
If you’re a high school student and don’t have a lifting program at your school then just look up specific teams workout programs. Or look up NBA players workouts that you would like to copy. Or your last option could be to look up workouts for your specific body type to see the most results in your improvements. Any of these options will cause you to see improvements. Make sure you get better no matter what.
