Rebounding is one of the most important aspects of basketball. It limits the other team from getting second opportunities at scoring who they are on offense. As well as giving you more opportunities on the offensive end when your team is trying to score and has the basketball. The is one of the easiest ways to control a game without actually scoring. But what happens when you’re on the opposite ends of these things? Usually your team loses. Getting out rebounded is always one of the keys coaches look at when they lose.
When you get out rebounded as a team then it results in your opponent having more opportunities to score. In most sports the team who has more points wins the game. So this is an obvious problem but other problems can arise from poor box outs such as fouls. Fouls benefit the other team in multiple ways. The first way is it puts your team in foul trouble and forces you to either take people out of the game or they will foul out. Secondly, when you get seven fouls as a team any time your team is fouled after that they get a chance to go to the free throw line and get free points. So either way you’re giving your opponent more ways to ultimately win the game.
Rebounding is an art. It’s all about body positioning and the ways you use your momentum. All my life I learned to first locate your opponent, attack them first and then completely turn around and use your butt to push them out of the way. It’s a very effective way to box people out. It’s what kids are taught all over the world. But I learned a better way.
I learned this technique of boxing out from my current college coach. I find it way more effective than any other way I’ve learned. You face box your opponent and rely on your teammates to get the rebound or you completely shield the opponent away from the ball and you just grab it. I was taught this was wrong all my life until I got to my current school. One of the best pieces of advice I have ever learned from a coach. It helped me tremendously in the game of basketball.
Which way were you taught to box out? Did you find this way effective? Have you ever tried the other way? These are all questions you need to ask yourself. Or you can post them to my blog and we can answer them together. I’m always here to answer or respond to any comments.
