My dad’s business is great because it is a small business. The employees include my dad and one other worker (my oldest brother). He owns a kitchen and bath remolding company. He does all his work in the shop behind our house (I know, what an easy commute to work). He has been doing this for over 40 years now. It is not just his career, it is his passion. My dad is what we call a Luddite (a person who is completely incompetent when using technology). He had no idea how to use social media and what impact it could have on his business. That’s where I stepped in to help.
After years of noticing more and more small businesses were growing their presence online, I realized it was time my dad’s small business grew to. I worked many hours to create multiple social network sites and future content to post. I created a Facebook page and Instagram account for the business (Twitter seemed irrelevant for my dad’s type of business). I made sure to create multiple posts and all contact information available before I started following people. Once that was completed, I followed other accounts that were similar to his industry and then followed people within the community.
People are excited to see my dad’s business online. He’s made most of his living entirely by word of mouth. Now with technology on his side, word of mouth travels even faster. Many customers have connected with us through social media sites. Customers now show their friends and family his work by directing them to his social media sites.
People are now able to search his business online and see the work he has done. Social media makes it easy to interact with customers. People enjoy viewing his work and always compliment his craftsmanship. I make sure a lot of content is posted, so customers have many different images to look to when referring to his business. A lot of people will comment and ask questions, and I always make sure to respond fairly quickly.
Social media is a great tool to use for any small business. It is essentially free advertising. Social media can be used to gain new customers, share new content, and create brand awareness. My dad’s business has tremendously benefited from social media. In the future, I hope to expand his business’s social media sites further and soon add a LinkedIn business page. Social media can be a bit overwhelming, but with assistance, it can make any small business flourish.
