Whether you are a communications media major or not, you understand that this world is a tough place. Sometimes you hear about people with these crazy jobs and you wonder how you even get to do that. How in a world with 7 billion people do I stand a chance against other people? You then convince yourself you aren’t good enough.
This happens to the best of us. So how do you succeed in the field of communications media? The answer is “persistency”.
I come from a small farm town called Bedford, PA so when I hear about all of these different people with these crazy jobs, I thought I would never get these opportunities. Once I came to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), I learned that this isn’t the luck of the draw. Everything comes out of the work you put in. My time at IUP with their Comm Media department has blessed me with opportunities to meet great alumni who have been everywhere! There is one IUP grad who works for the Golden State Warriors, one who works for Tesla, and so many other great places.
The work you put in is of course a very important part because if you can’t back yourself up then nothing else matters. The best advice I got from my time at IUP was to Network. Networking is everything and it will take you anywhere. Take the time to get to know your professors because they have great connections! Be thoughtful in where you want to intern because internships are huge, and they can really set you up for success. Another helpful piece of advice I got was to get started on a portfolio early and not wait. You don’t have to wait for jobs to start your portfolio. You can take your camera out and start taking photos of your friends. Get the practice in so you are more comfortable in your work.
I recommend taking every opportunity you can get. Especially when you are just starting out, take that experience. When I first got out of high school, I met a girl at church who happened to be the creative director at the Altoona Curve. She got me a summer job there and I have been there for the past 4 years. Since then, my old boss has moved on and now works with the Philadelphia Phillies! I was even supposed to work a few Phillies games until COVID struck the world. The point I am getting at is that I took advantage of a summer job which got me a connection to the Phillies as well as the Sixers, and even the Golden State Warriors. This all stemmed from one job!
So be sure that you take advantage of opportunities and network with those people. If you don’t have one already then create a LinkedIn account. One thing that is great about this field is that it may seem big, but it really is not. Everyone is connected in some way so start networking and take all the experience and help you can. If you are already in the communications media field and have a job, then what do you recommend telling everyone else about how to succeed in this field? What was your experience like getting your first job? Feel free to comment down below and let us know. Don’t forget to subscribe to the page and check out my other blog posts! Thank you so much!
