Composition Practice Tips

Creating art before you pick up your paintbrush might seem a bit weird. However, most artists can see the world in art. They don’t need to constantly grab their camera or their paintbrush. Yet, they can just see art. Once you figure out how to see the world in wonder and how to constantly compose, then picking up your camera will be so much easier because you aren’t constantly changing your shot.

Even before I picked up a camera, I was blessed with the ability to appreciate the beauty in everyday life. Don’t get me wrong, these things didn’t make me any good at photography. In fact, I still have to put in a lot of hard work to get the perfect shot. I have gotten to the point where I am always composing shots in my head so the creative process when I have my camera on hand becomes so much easier and smoother.

So how do you get better with composing shots? Study your idols. You need to find your style. What do you want your photography, your art, to say? Once you find your photography idol then study their work. Try and see if you can determine what composition style they were. Try this with a few different examples.

The next thing you can do is practice without your camera. Go for a walk and try and compose what you see. Don’t forget to crop what you see as well. Your entire field of view doesn’t have to be in the photo. So, try different points of view, different fields of view, and see how many different ways you can compose an image. You could also take your camera out and take some pictures and then critique your work. You can’t get better or more creative if you aren’t critiquing yourself.

There are many different ways to get better with composing shots, but we don’t have all the answers. If you have any fun ways of getting better with composition, then let us know in the comments. We are all on the same journey here of trying to get better. Thank you so much for checking out my blog and don’t forget to subscribe to my blog as well as my YouTube channel.
